ladies and gentlemen,

I am Kim Min-Soo , I teach Design History, Theory & Criticism at the Seoul National University. My colleague

Professor Oh In-Hwan and I very happy and honored to be here to present the “SNU College of Fine Arts Award” on behalf  of the SNU faculty. I would also like to express our sincere gratitude towards the Dean and staff of University of Brighton for the invitation and warm welcome.

We are here on this occasion to reaffirm the long history of friendship between the two universities and celebrate all  our graduating future generation.

The day calls not only for us to be equipped with creative intelligence but also to bear responsibility and renew        dedication to the sustainability of human life. While judging the Graduate Show, I have been moved by each

participants’  creative thinking full of passion. United Kingdom and the world will greatly benefit from this wonderful

pool of talents. But on the other hand, we, the world is at a paradoxical place where creative intelligence can also be a threat to the human kind.

Some time ago, the “Match of the Century” between the Google developed AlphaGo and Lee Sedol was held in   Seoul, Korea. Critics predicted that the incredibly intuitive and creative Lee will prevail. The result was not as

expected. AlphaGo ended up winning 4 out of 5 of the games. However, when the match was over, the world came

to evaluate the match from a different perspective; that what the single win achieved by Lee Sedol represents could

actually  be more amazing and meaningful than AlphaGo’s four consecutive victory. It could have been an impossible task to  carry on competing against the formidable “deep learning” big data machine. But in Lee Sedol’s unwavering

determination and human consciousness against the challenge of the self-learning artificial intelligence, we could see a glimpse of us, how we can continue to live our lives into the unknown future.

Witnessing the duel between the artificial intelligence and the human ability, I came to think that the leading academic institutions such as University of Brighton and SNU must not only cultivate the creative thinking and practical skills but also draw attention to the importance of the humanist consideration. As the world’s cultural technologies advance,     this kind of thinking will be called upon even more.

As future artists you will be holding countless exhibitions. As future designers you will be producing all kinds of images, products and clothing etc.. As future architects you will be erecting cities and housing. And now more than ever you are required to contemplate what all these mean to you, our lives and the human society.

I would like to sincerely congratulate the Graduate Show and particularly would like to relay these thoughts of responsibility to the talented recipient of the SNU award. No doubt I speak on behalf of all of us in expressing much gratitude towards the family, friends and the University of Brighton faculty and staff for their love and support.

Congratulations to all, the graduating class. Well done, professors.

Thank you.
